Position Description:

Designs, develops, and maintains complex mainframe applications using COBOL, CICS, DB2, and VSAM, ensuring high performance, reliability, and scalability. Architects and delivers sophisticated application enhancements driven by regulatory changes, infrastructure modernization, efficiency initiatives, competitive business needs, and strategic organizational objectives, as well as specialized client requests. Uses business knowledge to translate the vision for divisional initiatives into business solutions by developing complex or multiple software applications and conducting studies of alternatives. Analyzes and recommends changes in project development policies, procedures, standards, and strategies to development experts and management.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Participates in architecture design teams.
  • Defines and implements application-level architecture.
  • Develops applications on complex projects, components, and subsystems for the division.
  • Recommends development testing tools and methodologies and reviews and validates test plans.
  • Responsible for QA readiness of software deliverables.
  • Develops comprehensive documentation for multiple applications or subsystems.
  • Establishes full project life cycle plans for complex projects across multiple platforms.
  • Responsible for meeting project goals on time and on-budget.
  • Advises on risk assessment and risk management strategies for projects.
  • Plans and coordinates project schedules and assignments for multiple projects.
  • Acts as a primary liaison for business units to resolve various project/technology issues.
  • Provides technology solutions to daily issues and technical evaluation estimates on technology initiatives.
  • Advises senior management on technical strategy.
  • Mentors junior team members.
  • Performs independent and complex technical and functional analysis for multiple projects supporting several divisional initiatives.
  • Develops original and creative technical solutions to on-going development efforts.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a closely related field (or foreign education equivalent) and five (5) years of experience as a Principal Software Engineer/Developer (or closely related occupation) performing mainframe software development and analysis in financial services applications using COBOL, CICS, JCL, DB2, and VSAM.

Or, alternatively, Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a closely related field (or foreign education equivalent) and three (3) years of experience as a Principal Software Engineer/Developer (or closely related occupation) performing mainframe software development and analysis in financial services applications using COBOL, CICS, JCL, DB2, and VSAM.

Skills and Knowledge:

Candidate must also possess:

· Demonstrated Expertise developing, enhancing, and supporting high‑volume z/OS mainframe batch and online applications using COBOL, CICS, DB2, and VSAM; writing COBOL and DB2 stored procedures; performing application analysis and modernization; managing production deployments using z/OS, JCL, DFSORT, IDCAMS, IBM MQ, and CICS TS.

· Demonstrated Expertise designing and delivering cross‑platform solutions spanning z/OS CICS/Batch, Java microservices (Linux/Windows), Pega Platform, Oracle Exadata, and Azure/AWS cloud environments with container and event‑streaming technologies (AKS/EKS, Kafka); performing automated and manual testing (zUnit, JUnit/TestNG, Mockito, Postman, SoapUI, Selenium, JMeter), producing technical documentation (Confluence, Swagger/OpenAPI, Pega App/Dev Studio, Visio), and supporting post‑deployment validation and triage using Splunk/ELK, AppDynamics/Dynatrace, OMEGAMON, and ServiceNow workflows.

· Demonstrated Expertise developing and integrating UI with back-end services using Java, Spring Boot, and Oracle PL/SQL; and developing custom UI components within the Pegasys framework to enhance user interactions.

· Demonstrated Expertise architecting workflow‑ and event‑driven integrations, including Pega and mainframe event streaming via Kafka, secure REST and SOAP/XML services across z/OS Connect EE, Spring Boot, and Pega with OAuth2/JWT; and optimizing performance across CICS, DB2, batch, APIs, and Pega UI using targeted caching and tuning strategies (Spring Cache, Redis, Pega caching, CICS data tables, DB2 buffer pools).
