Getting an internship at Fidelity
Nora and Claire were both college students looking to find an internship to help grow their career skills and gain professional experience when they came across Fidelity.
Nora was working as a teacher’s assistant for her computer science classes when she heard about the opportunity from a fellow assistant who’d previously interned at Fidelity and really enjoyed it. “He highly recommended Fidelity because he had an excellent internship experience,” says Nora, who became a technology intern.
Nora’s co-worker introduced her to a Fidelity recruiter, who passed her resume along to the recruiter hiring for the role.
While Claire was exploring finance opportunities, she reached out to other students who’d interned at Fidelity and connected with alumni who were currently working there on LinkedIn. “Everyone from Fidelity that I reached out to was willing to chat, which stood out to me compared to other companies,” says Claire, a client relations intern.
Claire also spent time on Fidelity’s website to explore the internship possibilities and company culture. Fidelity has eight different Fidelity internship focus areas, so there's likely one that’s a fit for your skills and interests—even if you want to explore opportunities beyond finance. Claire initially looked into three different internship areas, but client relations ended up being the right fit for her.
Research and networking helped them each gain a better understanding of the role, and they applied through the official application process soon after. Phone screens with recruiters and interviews with their respective teams followed, and they both landed a paid, 10-week summer intern position.
What is it like to intern at Fidelity?
Once you accept your internship, Fidelity sets you up with an online platform that answers most questions, and recruiters stay in touch for anything else. “A lot of the questions or mandatory information that I needed to know was there, or I could reach out if I had more questions,” says Nora.
The site also helps you connect with other interns. Fidelity interns share a little bit about themselves on their location page, making it easy to get to know each other before starting. “It was awesome that I was able to connect with other interns before the internship even started,” says Claire.
When the internship begins, orientation walks you through the basics of the program. On the first day, you’ll attend several seminars and webinars to better understand the company and the internship timeline. During the first week you’ll tour the campus, meet your managers, and spend time getting to know the other interns.
From there, the internship is full of opportunities to network and connect through team meetings, social events, and one-on-one time with mentors and your manager. “There were several socials where we were encouraged to meet other interns, get to know people, and learn more about what we’re doing peer-to-peer,” Nora says.
Fidelity also encourages interns to branch out and connect with other employees across the company, which is a great way to explore other positions and find out about other areas of Fidelity’s business.
“The networking has been amazing. I’ve connected with people a step above me all the way up to branch leaders, and they have all been eager to chat. It feels like everyone within Fidelity wants to see each other grow and succeed,” Claire says.
