An internship at Fidelity is so much more than a foot in the door.

A Fidelity internship can unlock opportunities and catapult your career growth

Fidelity’s internship program is highly competitive, with thousands of students applying for just 1,100 roles in eight pathways (including non-financial roles) nationwide. You’ll get 10 weeks of hands-on, real-world experience working at an innovative and welcoming corporate firm.

“An internship at Fidelity is so much more than a foot in the door. Our interns are fully embedded into the teams. They have a manager and work on real business projects,” said Mollie, director of university talent programs.

“When interns leave Fidelity, we want them to feel like, ‘Wow, I really got a sense of what it was like to be at Fidelity.’ It’s what makes our internship so special,” said Kent, senior university lead.

What you can expect from your Fidelity Investments internship

When you’re a FIDTERN, as we call our interns, you get a unique experience designed to help you learn the ropes at Fidelity and the corporate world. Fidelity’s internships are a great balance of challenging work, practical skills development, networking, and fun socializing events.

Here are five of the many ways we set our FIDTERNs up for post-internship success.

1. Fidelity internships promote career readiness

“We’ve aligned our entire internship program to make sure each of our trainings and events supports career readiness. We want to make sure interns are walking away feeling like they learned something,” said Mollie.

We offer a combination of hands-on learning and outside experts to help you learn critical thinking, teamwork, communications, and more. For example, our communications expert teaches you must-know corporate communication tips like how to draft professional emails and how to conduct yourself with a senior leader. “Corporate culture is not intuitive,” said Mollie. Fidelity’s internship program helps you bring your most professional self to work.

2. Our corporate internships give you on-the-job training

“You get onboarded like a new associate. We set interns up for success. Then you start working within a business unit and going to team meetings,” said Kent.

You work on active business units helping to solve real business problems alongside full-time associates. You’ll be part of team meetings and have regular one-on-one meetings with your manager.

When you have down time, you have access to live webinars on a variety of topics to help you develop your skillset. This includes our financial literacy training, so you can position yourself to achieve your financial goals after school, whether that’s paying off your student loans or saving to buy a house.

3. As a Fidelity intern, you will present to senior leadership

You don't get to rub elbows with senior leadership in every corporate internship, but you do at Fidelity during a capstone-type presentation. “You’re able to present to senior leadership. You gain teamwork, collaboration, and leadership skills while honing your communication skills and being receptive to feedback and coaching,” said Jenna.

4. Fidelity internships offer you a hybrid work environment

The Fidelity internship gives you the best of both worlds—the flexibility of remote work with the collaboration and energy of the office. Early in your career, it may be especially important to be able to walk up to someone in person and ask a quick question or develop deeper relationships. Our hybrid environment gives you flexibility while helping you build meaningful relationships.

5. You get ample networking opportunities as a Fidelity intern

Networking can sound like a buzz word, but really, it’s all about building relationships. At Fidelity, connection is built into our culture at every level. Associates are friendly and eager to interact with one another. Fidelity interns have almost limitless chances to connect with others and our associates over the 10-week program. “We call them casual collisions at Fidelity. If you’re getting coffee or water, introduce yourself and make some small talk. Put yourself out there,” said Jenna.

First, you can meet other interns from different majors and other schools. You’ll have a chance not only to connect as colleagues working on different sides of the business but also as friends. “We all sat together as interns. Our morning chats were awesome,” said Alexander, a former intern who now works as an associate financial analyst at Fidelity. “Meet as many people as you can to get your name out there.”

You’ll also have access to a mentor whom you’ll meet with on a weekly or biweekly basis. Your mentor can help you develop in different ways from your manager, who is focused more on day-to-day tasks. Mentors are an incredible resource to help you navigate both Fidelity and your career. Here's what Kent said about the value of this mentorship, “We want interns to see not only the entry-level role but also where they can see themselves in five or 10 years.”

“You have access to tens of thousands of amazing employees who are excited to share their knowledge and wealth of experience. People always tell me that they look forward to intern season and helping students,” said Mollie. “There are plenty of opportunities to join meetings and meet other experienced professionals in the field, which I thought was super cool because, as an intern, you look at them like superheroes,” said Alexander.

The fun side of a Fidelity internship powers your personal growth

Finance is a serious business, but it can also be fun too—no, really. Our interns attend social events in the office and on group outings. Think of it as the corporate internship version of summer camp. We’ve gone to baseball games and fun parks. We’ve dropped everyone onto a pickleball court or into a bowling alley. We’ve been known to have ice cream parties, rescue animal visits, and challenge each other to spontaneous foosball tournaments.

You can also join one of our many groups to help you connect with employees who have similar interests. Participating in these groups could help you develop leadership skills. “Being involved is huge. Volunteer to help where you can with extracurricular events,” said Alexander.

Give your work your best effort.

How to get the most from your Fidelity internship experience

Corporate internships give you a chance to test the waters of a role or industry without a huge commitment, but you still want to treat it like a full-time job. Here’s how to do it.

Be professional and proactive in your corporate internship

“Give your work your best effort,” said Alexander. Double-check you met all the requests from your manager. Don’t just rely on spell check. Thoroughly review your work. If you’re not sure about it, ask someone else for advice or their feedback. “Being eager and proactive is important. We want students who will take the first couple projects assigned to them and knock them out of the park, then ask for other ways to get involved,” said Mollie.

The work you do now could matter for your future job prospects at Fidelity. “Interns are evaluated at the end of their internship. Their managers will basically submit a recommendation if they should be considered for another opportunity,” said Mollie.

Ask questions. “Get out of your comfort zone,” said Kent. “Curiosity is important at Fidelity. Asking questions and challenging the status quo ensures you learn,” said Mollie. Asking questions can help set you apart as a critical thinker. “Asking questions shows you’re very interested in and paying attention to what’s happening. Maybe a question you ask is one someone else had, and it could lead to better work,” said Alexander.

Learn as much as you can through your Fidelity internship

“Learn about all the opportunities at Fidelity, and take advantage of your 10 weeks here,” said Kent. Expand beyond the bubble of your assigned business unit or intern cohort. “Cross-collaborating with other business units gives you the opportunity to learn so much more professionally and about Fidelity,” said Jenna. “Finding out there were so many other teams was surprising. It’s cool to see how all the teams work together as a well-oiled machine,” said Alexander.

The best way to learn more and hone your skills is by asking for guidance. “Get feedback on your work. Fidelity’s way of managing is about helping people,” said Kent. Feedback is a combination of appreciation, coaching, and evaluation. You need all three to stay motivated, learn how you can improve, and know where you stand.

Express your interest in returning, and prove your worth.

Communicate your goals and explore other career-growth opportunities

After several weeks in your Fidelity internship, you will have a better sense if this career path, company, or industry is right for you. If you are interested in converting to a full-time employee, make your intentions clear. “Express your interest in returning, and prove your worth,” said Alexander.

“The ultimate goal of our internships is conversion, and we try to convert as many interns as possible,” said Mollie. While some internships feed direct hiring pipelines, some do not. Even if you’re not in a direct conversion opportunity, you might still have a chance for an indirect conversion through a different role or business unit.

Stay connected with your team

Working as a Fidelity intern is a huge boost to your career trajectory. “You have new experiences you can leverage on your resume to set you up for your next job,” said Kent. In fact, graduates who have relevant internship experience to their degrees are more than twice as likely to get a job after graduation.

If you aren’t offered a job at the end of your internship, know you are not alone. The current internship-to-job offer rate is now 66%, which is the lowest it’s been in five years. That’s due to a slower job market with increased competition.

“Keep in touch with your team. Shadow people if you can. Keep building and deepening the relationship,” said Jenna. Connect with your team, manager, recruiter, and other interns on LinkedIn. Periodically reach out to check in.  You can also develop new skills and earn new certifications or work in service-related fields like hospitality or retail, which help you develop highly transferrable customer service skills and emotional intelligence.
